CLOISONNE
The first example is an enameling technique on a metal base known as cloisonne.
Cloisonne is a technique of decoration which began in the 5th Century in the Byzantine Empire. Basically it is a method of decorating metal objects which is created by adding metal compartments and using these as a base which was filled with inlays of precious stones, glass and, after about the 12th Century enamel. In Ancient times the technique was used to create jewellery or decorate weapons with mostly geometric designs but in the Byzantine period techniques created with thinner wires made it possible to utilise a wider range of shapes to be filled with enamel and so pictorial images could be produced mostly for jewellery or mytsico religious images. In the 14th Century this technique had spread to China then Japan where the artisans made much larger objects for use as bowls, vases, trays, plates and other utilitarian items as well as statues and other decorative forms. This historic design technique spread to European countries in the 18th Century and is still used in China and Japan today.

IDENTIFICATION AND VALUATION SERVICES
IDENTIFICATION:
Antique Oriental Rugs - Where possible we are happy to identify the geographic location - town, village and/or region and Ethnic Tribal Group where relevant - of your antique oriental rug as well as document the reasons for our decision, This identification must be done in person as it is impossible to accurately asses the origins of antique rugs without a thorough study of the weaving style, type of pile knot, dyes and materials used in its construction. We are happy to take a guess from photos but it can only be an educated guess. We do not undertake identification of any rugs woven after 1980 as it is impossible to do so accurately with modern rugs.
As a guide there is a charge of $90 per hour for our identification services with a minimum charge of half and hour - $45 - payable in advance whether we can identify the rug or not. Where we are required to travel to view the item or items all travel time and expenses will be added to this hourly rate so contact us for a quote for any in person identification requirement. We are happy for owners to bring the rug to us to study.

VALUATIONS:
Antique Oriental Rugs - Where possible we will provide valuations of the retail replacement value for individual rugs and collections. These valuations will be based on the international retail and auction markets in France, Germany, Sweden, the UK, the USA, Turkey and Australia. It is impossible to provide a valuation on an oriental rug from a photo as it is necessary to study the rug in detail as described above in the identification section. Contact us in advance to arrange a valuation. As a guide to fees we charge $125 per hour for all work involved in the valuation and provide Individual Certificates of Valuation based on our knowledge, experience and research for each print.
We will give a quote based on the  approximate time necessary to do the valuation and at least half this amount must be paid in advance. The minimum charge for any valuation will be one hour which will need to be paid in advance. Travel time and expenses will be extra but we are happy for anyone to bring the rug or rugs to us for inspection.
No financial responsibility of any kind is implied or accepted by ourselves when these Certificates are issued.
